When to cruise the Nærøyfjord

The Nærøyfjord cruise runs year-round, so there is no wrong month, only different trips. Summer gives the longest days and the most options, autumn brings colour, and winter turns the fjord white. Here is how the seasons compare, and how long to stay.

The boats on the Nærøyfjord do not stop for winter. Norway's Best sails year-round, and the Lustrabaatane listings describe a fjord that can freeze over in cold winters. What changes from season to season is the light, the number of departures, the activities around the fjord and the weather.

This guide sets out what each season offers, how many days to plan, what to expect from the rain and what happens in the depths of winter. It uses the operators' and listings' own information, so where they are silent, so is this page.

The quick answer

Summer, roughly June to August, is the best time for most visitors: the longest days, the most departures and the full range of activities, including kayaking. Autumn brings colour and quieter boats. Winter is a real option: the boats run year-round, Norway's Best lists winter departures from Flåm at 12:00, 15:00 and 17:30, and a Bergen winter tour runs in the snow season. Western Norway is wet in any season, so pack a waterproof.

What is the best month to go to the Norwegian fjords?

For most visitors, a summer month. June to August brings the longest days, the most sailings and the widest choice of activities.

Long northern summer days mean more light for photographs and more flexibility to fit a cruise around trains and buses. The lunch tour from Bergen serves its light lunch on board in summer, from June to August, per its listing, and the full menu of trips on this site is available.

The shoulder months suit travellers who prefer fewer people and do not mind cooler air. Whatever the month, book the boat in the direction that fits your onward plans, as explained in the best Nærøyfjord cruise.

What is the Nærøyfjord like in summer?

Green slopes, long light and the most to do: the cruise, the RIB, the kayak and the day tours from Bergen.

Summer is the natural season for getting on the water at your own pace. The full-day guided kayak trip from Voss spends about 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours paddling in two legs, with a lunch break between them. The RIB from Flåm visits fjord farms and waterfalls in two hours.

On the Viking village tour from Bergen, the summer route includes a stop at Tvindefossen waterfall, about 110 m, instead of going straight to Voss. For a full overview of activities, read the best way to see the Nærøyfjord.

Is autumn a good time to visit?

Yes. Autumn brings colour to the slopes and often the first snow on the peaks, with the scheduled boats still running.

As summer ends, birches and grasses on the steep sides of the fjord turn yellow and red, and the summits, which rise to about 1,761 m, can catch early snow. The contrast between colour at sea level and white above is one of the best sights of the year.

Days shorten quickly, so check the timetable before you plan. The Viking village tour notes that from October to April its route can adapt to ice, so expect some changes later in the season.

Does it rain a lot in the fjords?

Western Norway is a wet region and the weather changes fast, so plan for rain in any season.

The fjord country catches weather coming in from the sea, and showers can pass through on a bright day. The boats run in rain, and the lunch tour states it runs in all weather. Rain also feeds the waterfalls, which are at their most dramatic after a wet spell.

A waterproof jacket and layers are the answer, along with a seat indoors when it pours. The details are in what to wear on a Nærøyfjord cruise.

Can you cruise the Nærøyfjord in winter?

Yes. The boats run year-round, and Norway's Best lists winter departures from Flåm at 12:00, 15:00 and 17:30.

Norway's Best publishes those three winter departures from Flåm and notes that its route may change from December to March. Both Lustrabaatane listings, including the classic cruise, note that the fjord can freeze over in cold winters, so check the departure close to the day.

Winter means snow down to the waterline on cold days, quieter boats and short daylight. Dress for the cold; the open deck can be raw, but the indoor seating gives the same views through the windows.

Does the Nærøyfjord freeze?

Sometimes. It froze over in the 1920s and in 1962, when scheduled boats could not enter, and the listings warn it can freeze in cold winters.

Wikipedia records the fjord freezing in the 1920s and again in 1962. Visitnorway and both Lustrabaatane listings say the fjord can freeze over in cold winters, which is why routes can change in the coldest months.

If you travel between December and March, keep your plans flexible. The Bergen winter tour offers a refund if it is cancelled in extreme weather, and its listing gives free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

How many days do you need for the Nærøyfjord?

One day covers the cruise. Two or three days let you add the Flåm Railway, Stegastein, the RIB or the kayak without rushing.

A single day is enough for the two-hour cruise and a return by bus, or for a guided day from Bergen, as described in Nærøyfjord tours from Bergen. Those tours are long, 10.5 to 12 hours.

With a night or two in Flåm, you can ride the Flåm Railway, visit Stegastein 650 m above the Aurlandsfjord, take the RIB or the Grand Tour bus to Stalheimskleiva, and sail the fjord on a separate day.

Two hours through the fjord in any season, with a cafeteria on board and free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Which season suits which trip?

Summer for the kayak and RIB, autumn for colour on the cruise, winter for the Bergen snow tour.

The scheduled cruise works in every season. The kayak suits warm months best. The RIB supplies thermal suits, which helps on cooler days. Winter visitors can join the Fjordrive minibus tour from Bergen.

If you are still choosing between fjords, read Nærøyfjord or Geirangerfjord.
